Meet the Digitool Team

The Digitool engineering team boasts seasoned industry veterans who have been with the Macintosh Common Lisp development effort for most, if not all, of its life. This kind of continuity is unusual in the software industry, and probably contributes to the stability, reliability, and steady growth of the product.

Alice Hartley

Senior Software Engineer

Alice was MCL engineering manager at Apple for three years starting in 1990. She oversaw the release of MCL 2.0 and 2.0.1 and the work on what Digitool has completed and released as MCL 3.0 for 680x0 Macintosh computers. Alice previously worked at Palladian and BBN. Prior to joining Digitool in 1995, Alice worked at R-Star.

Steve Hain *

Engineering Manager

Steve was one of the three founders of Coral Software in 1985 and a contributor to its Common Lisp implementation, which became MCL with Apple's acquisition of Coral Software in 1989. Steve is also the principal developer of Object Logo, another Coral product now owned by Paradigm Software. After Coral, Steve consulted for Gold Hill, for ILA on its MCL implementation of CLIM 1.0, and for DEC. Prior to joining Digitool in 1995, Steve was a member of the core engineering staff at Interleaf.

Gary Byers *

Senior Compiler Engineer

Gary is the main author of the MCL kernel and compiler. Gary's involvement with MCL began at Coral Software in 1985 and continued at Apple Computer through 1992. He is the designer and implementor of the MCL PowerPC architecture.

Bill St. Clair *

Consultant

Bill worked on MCL at Apple from 1989 until Digitool took over development. He helped get MCL 2.0 and 2.0.1 out the door and did a lot of work on MCL 3.0. He worked on the database and dependency systems for Apple Dylan. He is the author of Wood, an object-oriented database for MCL. Bill previously worked at Thinking Machines and a small audio signal-processing company called Dynatron.

* Steve, Gary and Bill are currently working elsewhere. We are grateful for their contributions to MCL.
